IV Companion

by Muhammad Hafiz

WHAT

The IV Companion aims to reduce the fear and pain of Intravenous (IV) insertion for first time pediatric patients.

WHY

Following the concept of the Gate Control Theory of Pain, the IV Companion vibrates with the use of coin motors positioned along the length of the child’s forearm, reducing the pain from needle insertion. It also reduces needle anxiety by blocking the child’s field of view during the IV insertion process.

HOW

The IV companion is made out of ABS Plastic wrapped with medical-grade Silicone for both the exterior and interior body, making it soft and smooth to the touch. The product can also be easily cleaned and maintained after every use. The soft and friendly form of the IV Companion blends in well with the interior of any pediatric hospitals, making the product less intimidating to children during the IV insertion process.

The fascination with making things started when I began building my own toys at the age of 5. At a later age, my deep curiosity on how things work and my empathic nature made me step into the world of Engineering and now, into Design.
